SNAP ACTION: Response to news that 49% of GBR has died
The head of Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) said on Monday in the Senate that it's quite possible that 50% of coral on the Great Barrier Reef has died in the last two years.
This is an unprecedented tragedy.
GBRMPA is holding a Reef Summit meeting in Townsville this week. We can't give up hope on our Reef, but we need strong action and we need it NOW.
Strong climate change action means NO NEW COAL projects. This starts with STOPPING ADANI. It means no royalties holiday, no $1 billion handout and no more favours from our Government to prop up this project.
WHAT WE WILL DO: 1. Come wearing a black shirt underneath a colourful shirt on Thursday morning. Meet at 8:00am at the Bulletin Square in Flinders St. 2. At 8:15, we will stand as a group. Gradually, half of the crowd will take off the outer colourful shirt and sit down wearing the black shirt (creating a powerful visual that half of the Reef has died) 3. By 8:30, the transformation is complete. Half the crowd is sitting in black, the other half is standing with Stop Adani-related signs. We will do a media conference with this symbolic image as a powerful backdrop.
NOTE: This is a peaceful and non-disruptive action.

The list of companies walking away from Adani’s toxic brand and climate-wrecking mega mine keeps growing. 59 companies, including 16 major insurers, have now ruled out working with Adani.
But Lloyd’s of London is still working with Adani to help the mining giant find insurance for its disastrous project.
Let’s flood the Lloyd’s office with calls now and let them know that allowing insurers to underwrite Adani’s coal mine is a risk we cannot afford!
Adani can’t build or operate their destructive coal mine and rail line without insurance.
A staff insider from US insurance giant AIG has confirmed AIG is insuring part of Adani’s mine project. Now is the time to tell AIG to insure our future, and not to renew insurance for Adani’s destructive coal mine.
On September 20, three days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit, the #StopAdani movement is stepping up to join the Global #ClimateStrike led by young people from the School Strike 4 Climate movement.
