Stopping Adani this QLD election

Queensland Votes #StopAdani

Adani is pressing ahead with their plans for a dangerous new coal mine in Queensland. Adani’s mine threatens our way of life and would destroy our land, water, and Great Barrier Reef.

Right now, Adani’s finances hinge on a $1bn loan from the Federal government. But this $1bn loan to Adani cannot go ahead without sign off from the Queensland government.

Queensland is in the midst of a state election. We have until 25 November to make sure every Queenslander knows where the parties stand on giving Adani a $1bn loan.

To do that, we need your help.

The calling parties for this election campaign push are being hosted and supported by GetUp.

3 things to do this election

The most effective way to shift hearts and minds is one-on-one conversations. That’s why GetUp is supporting people across Australia to host calling parties, bringing their friends together, and call into key electorates to ensure Queenslanders in swinging seats knows where the different parties stand on giving a $1bn public loan to Adani.

Host your own calling party and register your calling party on the map.

To get all the material you need to make calls - including conversation guides - register your calling party on the map below and you will be emailed a resource pack with everything you need.

However, four materials to get you started include:

There is also a webinar that includes a campaign update and a training in how to have powerful conversations.

Make a roster with your #StopAdani group to survey and distribute flyers. Organise weekend market stalls/flyering, stand at public transport stops, host conversations outside supermarkets.

Queensland Election FAQS

We know the most powerful way to shift hearts and minds is by having one-on-one conversations. The way that people from across Australia can have these all-important conversations with Queenslanders is over the phone.

We will place calls into Queensland electorates where there is a real contest of ideas for whether or not the $1bn loan should be handed to Adani. In some of these electorates, the sitting member won by as few as 125 votes at the last election.

By hosting calling parties and having powerful conversations with Queenslanders in these key electorates, we will help ensure that when they go to the ballot box, those voters are thinking about where the parties stand on this crucial issue.

In this way, we can build pressure on whoever the next Queensland government is, to veto the $1bn loan and shatter Adani’s plans for getting their coal project off the ground.

ALP: Supports Adani’s plans for a coal project. Would veto the $1bn taxpayer-funded loan from NAIF to Adani.

GREENS: Opposes Adani’s proposed coal mine, port, and rail project. Would revoke Adani’s mining leases and environmental approvals. Would veto the $1bn taxpayer-funded loan from NAIF to Adani.

LNP: Supports Adani’s plans for a coal project. Supports the $1bn taxpayer-funded loan from NAIF to Adani.

ONE NATION: Supports Adani’s plans for a coal project. Instead of NAIF loan, One Nation proposes that the state government build, pay for, and own the rail line from Adani’s mine to Adani’s coal port.

Queensland Premier Palaszczuk’s announcement to veto the $1bn NAIF loan “on the first day of being re-elected” comes after months of intense community pressure from the #StopAdani movement right across Queensland.

This community movement is going to keep the pressure on and ensure that this veto sticks. But first there needs to be a veto to keep stuck in the first place!

That’s why it’s pivotal that people across Australia host calling parties, hit the phones, and ensure that when Queenslanders go to the polls on November 25th they know where the parties stand on giving a $1bn loan to Adani.

Against all odds, by working together, we’ve already made one Premier shift their position on the $1bn loan.

If Tim Nicholls is going to be the next Premier, then we will band together and shift him as well.

This all-important $1bn loan to Adani cannot go ahead unless both the State and Federal governments support the loan.

For its part, the Queensland state government can exercise its power of veto to rule out any NAIF proposal.

With the state election coming up on 25 November, we want to ensure that the next Queensland government will use this veto power and ensure Adani does not get a $1bn taxpayer-funded handout.
